[Icy-Veins] Why You Should Reroll Tempers Until You Get a Greater Affix

A lot of Diablo 4 players treat Greater Affix (GA) tempers as a lucky bonus rather than something you actively aim for. With the Season 11 changes, you can directly pick the tempered affix you want, so most players simply temper and hope for the best before moving on directly. But that mindset might be holding you back, especially if you sanctify your item right after as well. After burning through all their Scrolls of Restoration, a few people noticed something surprising! It turns out that GA tempers do not seem nearly as rare as most people think, but they should still be used with care. GA Tempers Are Not That Rare On Reddit, some players decided to finally use their scrolls instead of hoarding them and tracked the results across 50+ GA tempers. Here is the outcome:

• GA rolls usually appeared within 2-5 rerolls
• Average felt closer to 1 GA every 10-20 attempts
• In some cases, GAs popped on the first or third try

That does not mean GA tempers are guaranteed, the RNG is still very real, but it does suggest that rerolling is worth it, especially if you have a ton of scrolls. As long as you keep rerolling, the system will eventually hit a GA. Since it could still go up to over 100 rerolls if you are unlucky, this should not be used on all items. However, if you have a perfect or nearly perfect item, it is definitely worth it, especially before you sanctify the item and lock it. The Most Common (and Costly) Mistake There is one big catch, and it is a mistake a lot of players admit they made. It turns out that GA tempering only works on Ancestral items. Trying this on a 750 power item or non-Ancestral gear is a complete waste of scrolls. How GA Tempering Actually Works Here is a quick reminder for anyone who needs it:

• When you temper an affix, there is a small chance it rolls as a Greater Affix
• Once your normal temper attempts are used, Scrolls of Restoration let you retry
• This can be repeated indefinitely, as long as you have scrolls
• After landing a GA, you can Masterwork the item for an additional blue-star bonus
• Once you have done everything you could on your item (gems, enchanting, masterworking, tempering) you can sanctify it for a chance to get another bonus, but keep in mind that this will lock your item

Scrolls are automatically consumed in the tempering screen, so you do not have to activate them manually anymore. They are listed under your materials. Where Scrolls of Restoration Come From If scrolls are the reason you have been holding back, that might not be an issue either.

• They drop from Infernal Hordes
• You want to spend all your Aether on the Materials Chest to get the most out of it

Should You Aim for GA on Every Item? This is where it can get complicated. When exactly should you reroll for GA? Here is the most recommended approach that will allow you to go for GA without wasting your scrolls on items you will swap out 2h later:

• Always aim for GA tempers on build-defining gear, so nearly perfect or perfect items that already have most of your required affixes
• Do not force it on minor slots if you already have a strong roll
• Avoid sinking hundreds of scrolls into non-critical upgrades

Some players got lucky fast. Others burned through their full stack of scroll chasing perfection. GA tempers are powerful, but RNG can absolutely turn into a trap if you are not careful. One thing is sure, GA tempers are not just “nice when they happen.” If you are working with Ancestral gear and a healthy scroll supply, rerolling is often worth the effort.
